Since 1984, the Curran Foundation has provided over $7.8 million in grants to the St Vincent’s Campus to support the acquisition of vital equipment and facility upgrades.
The Foundation’s grants have provided a number of significant investments for the Campus including: a linear accelerator for cancer treatment in the early 1990’s which enabled cancer treatment to continue at the Darlinghurst Campus when government funding was unavailable; development of the Walter McGrath Library at St Vincent’s in partnership with the University of New South Wales; and many high priority items for the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department including mobile x-ray screens, monitors, transportable ventilators, mobile resuscitators and portable ECGs.
The Intensive Care Unit was renamed the Curran Foundation Intensive Care Unit in 2002 in recognition of the Foundation’s support of the critical care facilities on the Campus.
Foundation grants have also supported a number of important research projects such as the Curran Foundation Chair of Neuroscience at the Garvan Institute to investigate causes and treatments for hearing loss; nurse-lead research into best practice treatment for critically ill patients; and break through research into understanding and treating Alzheimer’s.
The most recent achievement for the Foundation has been to raise
over $3 million dollars to support the acquisition of a powerful
computerised tomography scanner (CT) for the Campus. This leading
technology enables faster, safer and more accurate assessment of
heart disease and stroke and will facilitate more timely and effective
treatment for patients.
