Retinal Camera for the St Vincent’s Diabetes Centre
With diabetes the most common cause of new blindness in Australia, it is vital for people with diabetes to undergo regular eye screening. The non-mydriatic retinal camera supported by the Curran Foundation allows Diabetes patients to be screened during their regular appointments with Endocrinologists at St Vincent’s. Without the camera, diabetic patients would need to attend separate clinics for eye screening at additional cost and time.
“Thanks to the support of the Curran Foundation; the new camera has greatly improved our services to our patients.” Dr Jerry Greenfield, Endocrinologist, St Vincent’s Hospital.
Liver Scanner for Gastroenterology
Safe and simple screening of individuals who are deemed at risk of liver disease is vital because liver deterioration is usually asymptomatic. Individuals generally seek medical advice only when significant damage has already occurred.
The FibroScan ® acquired by St Vincent’s with financial support from the Foundation’s 2008 Tax Appeal is a break through in the assessment of liver disease.
This new screening technology ensures patients receive more timely treatment and ultimately better health outcomes. The new equipment for the Gastroenterology Unit replaces the need for liver biopsy and provides accurate assessment of liver damage in less than ten minutes.
