Alzheimer’s Research

In 2008, the Hannan family generously donated $100,000 to Professor Bruce Brew’s research in to Alzheimer’s at St Vincent’s Hospital.

Professor Brew’s research group has been exploring the role of inflammation in the causation of the Alzheimer’s and has already found that quinolinic acid (an immune related nerve toxin) is abnormally produced in people with Alzheimer’s leading to the formation phosphorylated tau. It is phosphorylated tau that disturbs normal nerve function and is likely to be the underlying nerve basis for the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Professor Brews’ investigation into the role of nerve toxins and Phosphorylated tau is continuing thanks to the Hannan’s generous support. .
